Quality issue with mjpeg, framerate issue with h.264

Post by anovastat »

Hi all,

Just purchased a Amcrest IP2M-841 ProHD. I have a file drop to a NAS. When I save it as mjpeg the playback is smooth but the quality is poor, lots of pixelation. When I save it as h.264 (all types) the quality is great but every other second of frame is missing during playback i.e. I get seconds 2, 4, 6,8 of the clip and it's choppy.

I've adjusted the resolution and bit rate up and down with no issue with both formats.

I either need to resolve the quality of the mjpeg or the playback of the h.264 files.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hello anovastat,

Under MJPEG (substream) from video settings, choose H.264 as the compression. If the camera is wireless, how far is it from the wifi router? because if the signal quality at the camera location is low, it can cause drop in frames.

Thanks for the response Melvin.

It's wired. I'm not sure what you mean though. The substream is for remote play to a phone, correct? I'm looking for high quality main stream video to a NAS for storage and playback. Also, I can choose one encoding type from a pick list MJPEG or one of the H.264 profiles but not MJEG AND H.264...or am I missing something?

The camera is plugged into a Gigabit switch that is connected to a Synology NAS, newer with high specs. I don't think it's a bandwidth issue.

Thanks.

Hello anovastat,

I was actually referring to the settings in the cameras web interface. Under set up > Video, you have sub stream and main stream and you can set the quality there. Yes sub stream is mostly used by apps. So is the quality really bad when you look at the camera interface directly or just with the recording on Synology?

Terrible. The main stream is heavily pixelated live and on playback. I've adjust bit rate and resolution up and down with mjepg, seems to have no change to quality. Whereas H.264 looks great with high or low resolution and different bit rates. I would go with H.264 but playback is every other second of frame and I'd like a smooth video. I've saved a copy of the H.264 file locally, to my PC as a test, so no bandwidth issues, and still have that issue.

I guess my question is there some setting I'm missing or is this camera unable to save smooth frame video with H.264?

Hello anovastat,

The camera does have the ability to stream high quality video on H.264 so its either the camera you have or some compatibility issue with the Synology device. Give us a call if you do not mind so that we can actually see what you get and try something together.
