This was my screen a few minutes ago, I've got 4 cameras displayed in separate instances of VLC and Firefox is displaying a TV screen in PiP mode bottom right and a second tab showing the forum. CPU useage on my PC runs at around10% like this.

Do you need a special setting in the camera setup to get this stream to rtsp in vlc ?

I'm using VLC to access the RTSP feeds from the cameras i.e. in VLC Media/open network stream/open media and in network URL enter -
"rtsp://username:[email protected]:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0"
substituting the appropriate username and password and the IP address is for a camera on my own network.

Obviously this does nothing more than allow you to monitor a camera, no access to controls or camera settings.
My AMCREST Cameras:-
2 x IP3M-941B firmware V2.620.00AC00.3.R, Build Date: 2019-12-18
1 x IP2M-841B firmware V2.420.AC00.18.R, Build Date: 2019-08-03

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'rtsp://admin:[email protected]:554/cam/realmonitor?channel=1&subtype=0'. Check the log for details.

I got a ip2m-863
