Wifi camera bandwidth to NVR w/ motion detection

Post by chrisj »

I have a 4108E-HS with some POE cameras wired to it, which seem to work fine. I'm thinking of adding one or two wireless cameras (probably IP3M-941, but not sure yet) in some locations where I have decent WiFi coverage but not where I can get a direct wired connection from the NVR to the camera.

I only need the WiFi-connected cameras to record when they detect motion, and I'd rather not congest my WiFi router with unnecessary traffic. So I'm curious if the motion detection is handled by the camera or the NVR in this case. In other words, does it use the WiFi efficiently or does it constantly stream 2Mb+ through the router even when there's nothing to capture? I have a feeling it's the latter (inefficient) case, but would love to hear otherwise. If it does constantly stream, is it possible to have it stream higher bit rates when motion is detected and lower bit rates when monitoring?

Hello chrisj ,

When you add wifi cameras to the NVR, it can cause some network traffic unlike camera directly connected to the NVR. However, unless the cameras is being live viewed from the monitor , PC, phone app or kept for continuous recording, it will not take much data.

I installed a second router that i had laying around. It is set as a wireless access point not a gateway. I have my cameras connected WiFi to the second router and it lowered the traffic on my main WiFi network. 1 router is set to channel 1 the other is set on channel 11. The routers are hard wired together with cat5, and on different floors in the house.
It is one way to improve speed on my main WiFi network for my other devices, IE: phones, computers, TV's that use WiFi. And 1 way to put my old routers to use.
