Unable to play mp4 videos stored in NAS
Unable to play mp4 videos stored in NAS
I was able to configure my 7 wifi ip cameras to my QNAP NAS with a wireless connection(100Mbps) using a Netgear WNCE2001 adapter connected to the second network card on my NAS. The cameras are saving the files but when I try to open them it says that the file is corrupted. I wanted to know if anyone is experiencing this kind of behavior, I have the feeling it may be because the wireless connection so I want to make sure that's what's causing the problem before I upgrade the wireless method of connecting the cameras to the NAS. Thanks for any feedback.
Re: Unable to play mp4 videos stored in NAS
A number of questions come to mind.
Has this setup ever worked for you?
The files being saved to your NAS aren't zero byte files are they? This is one of the problems I've had with saving to my NAS. The file is created initially but then no data is saved to it.
What are you using to play the files, have you tried e.g. VLC?
Have you tried simplifying things by connecting the NAS and at least one or two cameras by ethernet?
I use MediaInfo to inspect all the properties of video files. Have you tried something similar and if so what does it show?
How about posting one of the files? You could PM me if you don't want to upload here.
Can't think of anything else at the moment

Re: Unable to play mp4 videos stored in NAS
Same problem here.
Mp4 files are being recorded to the NAS but no software can open them. I also get various sized mp4 files written with extension ".mp4_". These cannot be opened either if renaming the extension. Note: these are not files which are in the process of being written to the NAS, these are historical files.
I suspect the problem might lie somewhere with packets being dropped over wifi and not not using a micro SD card in the camera. Not sure how much buffering the camera can handle before writing corrupt packets to the NAS. I'll try using a micro sd card to see if that solves my problem.

Re: Unable to play mp4 videos stored in NAS
Hello and welcome to the forum @cawauk ,
That's interesting. In both cases it's video files being written to a NAS that are causing the problem. My own choice is to write the snapshots generated by motion events to my NAS and the videos to the SD card. What make of NAS do you have?
I'll change the setting on one of my cameras to write videos to my NAS just to see what I get.

Re: Unable to play mp4 videos stored in NAS
I don't mean to necro this thread, but it directly relates to what I encountered yesterday and I thought I'd share my experience. I've currently got an IP4M-1041B that I have configured to write to a NAS server running on a spare Ubuntu 20.04 machine I have on my network. The camera connection is wireless and I have snapshots of the camera's view stored every 5 minutes along with motion detection that also gets uploaded to NAS. This has been working pretty well for the past 3 weeks. I figured "Great! Time to update with more cameras!"
Bad move.
Yesterday, I received 5x more IP4M-1041B cameras and set three of them up with similar configurations, but in different locations within my house. They were all connected via WiFi and had 5 minute snapshots + motion detection recorded to NAS. This is when things failed pretty much across the board. My original camera which was working fine started posting corrupt mp4 files that could not be opened. The 5 minute snapshots would sometimes be okay, sometimes appear as a file with 0-byte size, or simply not appear at all. I observed this behavior across all of the newly configured cameras.
I disconnected the three new cameras and my original camera went back to operating like a champ.
Not sure what is up, but I suspect that there isn't any sort of validation when posting capture data to NAS. Instead of spinning my wheels troubleshooting, I plan to box things up and return them for a refund. I didn't even get around to opening the last two cameras. It's too bad, because in every other aspect, these cameras are actually pretty nice.
