IP8M-T2499EW vs T2499EB

Post by Welshwood »

Does anyone know if there are any differences between the two other than one is white and the other is black? I recently acquired two new T2499EB’s off eBay, and their focus doesn’t seem as sharp as my existing T2499EW. (All are the 2.8mm model)

EB and EW are only Black and White and E meaning POE

Only other thing that could be different is FW. It might be the ones you have installed the W might have different Firmware then the ones from seller.

If it was something like T2499EB-V2 not that there is such a thing however if there was a V2 that could be something different then your EW models.

Thx for the speedy reply!

I was thinking of checking the FW but I keep hearing how others have bricked their cameras going this, so was nervous of proceeding!

What is the easiest way to see what FW version I have? (Ideally using AVP otherwise I’ll have to check tomorrow)

Also…

The only FW I can find says “Only for IP8M-T2499EW-40MM & IP8M-T2499EW-28MM”

Mine is the IP8M-T2499EB 28mm. Do you think that would be fine for the EB?

Yes, I will pass that info along and see if the person that is in charge of the pages can get it fixed so people are not confused about B or W. Might be EW was only color offered at the time and maybe there is a 2499 that isn't E offering. Maybe if they had POE Only better and less confusing..

About the FW it is best found on the WebUI of the camera. Picture below is a different camera but gives you an idea of where to look.. Log in then click Setup, then on left click Information, Version and there you can find all your FW..

Also looking at the FW list, Might be because the camera has the same FW number scheme as a couple of other POE cameras so they wanted to make sure someone with the 1180EW wasn't using your or trying to use your cameras FW seeing they both offer same number profile just different release date. I know that one of my Cameras that is no longer offered FW for shares FW for 3 different models and I will admit I am using one that isn't for mine but it worked and seeing it is 2018 where mine has nothing newer then 2017. I thought I would try the newer.

Update: I posted to Amcrest Support for clarification on why there’s not a FW for the T2499EB. I have just received an unbelievably short (and unhelpful) reply:

“In this case IP8M-T2499EW-40MM camera is discontinued”

That was it!!! No other words of advice!!

I shall now follow you’re advice above and report back, although I’m still worried about bricking the cam if things go wrong! Fingers crossed all goes well.

Update 2: Actually, I’ve just tried asking Amcrest one more time for some help - before I try going for the EW version. At least surely they can supply the last known FW for the EB! Seems very unreasonable to just say “discontinued” and try and close the conversation down! 🤞🏼

IT is interesting because it don't show on the FW page that it is Discontinued not saying it isn't but that it interesting that is how you would get a reply. I mean I have had some issues with a camera that is long past its prime and 2 years ago when I made a ticket about it, I was sure greeted with it is no longer supported under warranty but they say Life Time Support and so they worked to solve the issue it had even having to take it to higher support. Once contact from him the issue was solved within a short time and sad he isn't with Amcrest anymore. Was someone that cared about Amcrest Clients.

About bricking Cameras. I have not ever bricked a camera from doing Updates. I have bricked cameras from letting others use them on CCA cables. I have updated and Down graded cameras many times even just this month one of my Recorders has 4 different FW packages installed trying to find one that would cure the issue I was having.

To Brick a camera or Recorder while it is doing an update someone would need to remove from power (Or Power Fail) and or there was an issue that update caused camera to over heat or cause damage from some other issue. 1 thing I never do is update my Cameras at night if I am using IR and if I have a Power supply that is old the extra pull of power while doing the update could brick it..

Well I’ve had a reply, and my perseverance paid off:

“both the camera firmware are same the only difference is colour change only. please upgrade the firmware and reinstall it again”

So there seems to be an acknowledgement that when they say T2499EW FW on their website, they mean to say it will also work on an EB.👍🏼

I won’t name names, but the same Amcrest support person has tried previously to just fob me off with short, sharp negative answers. Clearly hoping I’ll just go away!

Thx for the advice on the FW upgrading. I’ll give it a try over the coming days when I get some quality time (I don’t want to rush it!).

Btw, I’m using the cameras for various nature spots in my garden. I have one trained on a duck nest (she’s been sitting on her eggs now for about a week!), and another nest - this time home made - which only attracts some passing curiosity from some birds, and my latest cam is for a Hedgehog House. I also have some old Foscam cameras (in bird box and in an area where we get occasional deer) - but these cameras are no where near as good as the Amcrest IP8M’s. I have had trouble with needing the cameras to focus close - bird boxes are typically only about 20-30cm high, so can be quite challenging. The last bird box I made I built with an extended ceiling and at an angle to get the ideal position. Getting some great shots of Bluetits visiting it daily - not nesting yet though. I’ve read you can make most ip cams focus closer by carefully breaking the seal around the Len’s mount and twisting the Len’s to adjust the focus? Might try this on a Foscam (as I’m less worried if I break them!)? I did raise a ticket with Amcrest support about this, and whether they would sell the 4mm Lens (mines the 2.8mm Lens) - but that was a week ago and I still haven’t heard from them (I hope I haven’t upset them by asking so many questions😂)
