Your screenshot shows the video encoding settings and I don't think that's the place to look.
I think that any improvements that you can make will be in the camera/configuration settings for each profile normal/day/night particularly the sharpness and contrast although I'm sure you have already explored those settings
All the config settings are at default for both. I showed the video setting just to show that I have set the highest quality image possible. I have already tried adjusting the sharpness and that didnt help. It only adds more noise to the already noisy image. That also triggers false motion detection at night. I will post an image of the configuration later today.

Also setting the higher res camera to a lower res is not a solution for any problem. If I have to buy H2X and run it at 720p or 960p, I might have as well bought the HX1. It is just not a cost effective solution. I did try that anyway just to kill my curiosity and didnt help.
It will be useful for further discussion in this thread if someone with both HX2 and HX1 tries a similar comparison like I have done and post the results. Please use default. Any changes to picture quality settings like contrast, sharpness, exposure etc. only adds more grains to the image and triggers false motion detection at night. Does not improve the image quality.
I would appreciate if Amcrest does this comparison and post the results.

Another thing to consider is that HX1 and HX2 have the same size sensor, 1/3". The HX2 has about 2.5 times as many pixels as the HX1. Bigger pixels typically gather more light. So the HX2 with possibly smaller pixels could be gathering less light.
Here are pictures taken with day light but some areas under shade.
HX2 does well when there is sunlight. But the grass and the shrub in the shade closer to the house are sharper with HX1. Both have the default config for exposure, sharpness etc

Evening images. No direct sun light. You can see that the grass and shurb are very sharp in the HX1 image. Where as the grass and shrub, expecially the grass is just hazy in the HX2 image.
So the fact by Jack that the HX2 draws less light probably explains why the HX2 image is not sharp when there is low light.
I have already bought 2 more HX1B's from Amcrest ebay store as that is the only place you can buy HX1. So will Amcrest take back my HX2's and reimburse or give me store credit?
I wasn't saying to turn your RES down sorry if you took it that way... I was just trying to explain why my Picture in a camera with 1.3mp like one of yours isn't in same settings or Picture Width.... Then looking at your Camera it wouldn't have been anyway MINE is only 92degree fov...
So looking at the last 4 picture you posted today there is some Ghosting (Reflections) I am going to guess caused by going though the Glass that looks like Double Pane... Also you have an Eyeball effect because the FOV is past the window area. Then I got to thinking I didn't look very close at the other night pictures to well... Then looking at them I see Ghosting in them as well... This tells me they were taking behind a glass as well. This is my Guess... So if that is true then that kind of clears some of the issue up a little...
One the HIGH RES camera is trying to FOCUS on the picture in the GLASS more seeing it has HIGHER REZ then the 1.3mp camera that does detect some as I can see same area of Ghosting or Reflection but has the ability with lower MP to push past and focus on things past it....
Also looking at the CONFIG of your pictures that you said both are set to default I am little confused really because the Default for almost any camera that is a Day Night camera is not set to Color where yours is and that couldn't be the settings that was when your pictures last night was taken because it Looked in B/W... However that could be set to color and just can't pick it up well enough
WOW I will say that your 1.3mp camera does have a WIDE fov 140 degree and your 3mp 135... Strange thing is that the 3mp in the night picture kind of looks zoomed in some while that might only be the HIGHER Res at work... I can clearly see the House in the picture background on the left in the 3mp total outline. Where the 1.3mp I can see the light in the door window however can only make out the idea of a shape there... Then in the 3mp one I can see the Trees and what looks like a Power pole and strange thing in the 1.3mp one there is a strange shape of what looks like a House with a Firestack at the area where the Power pole is.... Yet clearly in the 3mp that house isn't there and is some odd Ghost effect of the 1.3mp camera most likely off of Glass..
TBH I wish your day pictures the 4 you posted today would have been of the same view out of the same view area. Moving the cameras only make it harder to judge.
Look at the grass and the shrub near the patio. Clearly the HX1 gives a sharper image. Forget the objects that are beyond 50 feet.
Whatever are the conditions, they should affect both the cameras. That is not the case. I have already played with color and B/W. The exposure, sharpness etc. are all default. If HX2 is affected by any of the conditions and HX1 is not, then HX2 is an inferior design.
What good is the higher resolution if the higher amount of pixels are the root cause for the poor image compared to a low res camera i.e smaller pixels sense less light and hence a hazy image.
A Civic is not expected to outperform an Accord. A Corolla is not expected to outperform a Camry, if driving on the same road.
It will help if anyone who has both H2X and H1X post some images, preferable under low light like shaded areas. A picture is worth a 1000 words.
I will wait for the comparison from Amcrest as I dont have anything else to add to the thread.
