Email test failed on IPC IP3M-954E

Post by RobertWM »

Called Amcrest support and was told the only SMTP server that will accept email from the Amcrest camera is Yahoo's server. Support didn't tell me that a Yahoo "App" password is required before Yahoo will allow the SMTP login. The steps below describe creation of the App password and setup of Amcrest SMTP for a Yahoo email account.

At Yahoo.com

Sign in to your Yahoo email account using your Yahoo email address and Yahoo email account password --
Click your account name > Account Info > Account Security > Manage App Passwords
Select your app = Other App
Enter custom name = Amcrest (or anything else)
Click Generate
Copy the app password created by Generate

In Amcrest Surveillance Pro

Click Network > SMTP
SMTP Server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port = 465
Anonymity (not checked)
User Name = your Yahoo email address
Password = the Yahoo App password you copied above
Sender = your Yahoo email address
Encrypt Mode = SSL
Subject: whatever
Receiver: the email address you want to send to; don't forget to click the + sign
Interval Time: the seconds the camera waits before sending the email
Check Health Email to test the configuration
Click Save
Click Network > SMTP > Test

Amcrest Surveillance Pro initially told me the "Email test failed." It lied, the test email was successfully sent. Subsequent tests reported that that the email tests were successful.

Thank you for this information. Was extremely helpful since I've been working on getting email to work for past
2 days. Happened to stumble across your info which was resulted in a successful email test alert. Thank you for
sharing.

In general, if there is one thing that irks me more than information/documentation that is lacking, it is bad information/documentation.

The overall message in this post that "only SMTP server that will accept email from the Amcrest camera is Yahoo's server" is dead wrong. I have (3) Amcrest cameras, each one a different model, and Google/Gmail SMTP works just fine with all three. Amcrest cameras have other problems such as the half-baked feature rollouts in the firmware but SMTP emails is not one of them.
Thanks,

@zkaps the issue isn't all cameras or recorders and all servers. The main issue was back in 2018 or 2019. So the main issue is if you don't have your own email server and can make it so you can get all types of emails and not able to setup the email info in the email server settings page then people can have issues with emails. I personally can get emails from very old cameras, recorders some that have not had a update since 2013. However if I tried to connect these devices to my gmail, hotmail, msn or yahoo account yahoo is the only one I would be able to get a chance to connect them to. Again the newer ones with FW from 2019 or newer there isn't an issue with that .

So then the issue with the Post OP here is that the 954 camera is older no longer supported with FW camera and last update was 2017 and so they fall in the (Buy your own email server) or use yahoo as only email service that will work with them cameras..

Again I can't remember the date that all emails stopped from all services. Gmail was one of the first to change the way the 3rd party emails were handled and others soon followed. Yahoo did as well however in doing so they made it where people could follow some steps to get the email server to work with 3rd party hardware. Kind of a PITA to get it right the first time and for me I would need to do a different password for each device and it was just easier to use my own email server so I didn't have to jump the hoops seeing I have way to many devices. The oldest one still working today is from 2010 and have it going to my email as well. Most cases it is best really just to use Push from the app it is faster and no images stored or filling up an email service if someone is using a metered one...
Be Safe.
