How are you connecting to the camera? I've found the most reliable way is by way of the Webgui.

I take it that it's a fairly old camera. Has it been OK up to now?

I've never heard of anything like this before, it sounds very suspicious and so I just downloaded a fresh copy of that firmware and installed it in my own camera. I added a new user. What I am seeing is entirely normal.
