I don't think it is a waste. I have SDs in all my cameras because if someone gets inside, they could find/take the NVR, but the chances of them taking every single camera is slim. For $9/camera I have a 2nd copy of most recent activity and peace of mind.
My current (built 2019) Amcrest infrastructure consists of four NV4108E-HS each running 6 cameras (IP4M-1028, IP4M-1051, and a sole IP3M-HX2). All NVRs are running latest v4 firmware. I'm hoping to replace all (14) of my IP4M-1028E (discontinued) with IP8M-2493E -V2 , but running into a showstopper....
