Question about Wifi and PoE

Hello, I am looking to buy an NVR system for my house. I am looking to only buy 4 cameras right now but would like the ability to add 4 more later down the road. What I would like to know is if I go with a PoE NVR system such as the Amcrest NV2108E-HS 8-Channel POE NVR. Will I be able to add both PoE and Wireless cameras to the NVR? Some places I would prefer to use PoE and other places I would not be able to wire an ethernet cable but could easily power it through micro usb. Is this a possibility?

Hello and Welcome to the Forum..

Yes you can wire some POE and add to the Poe ports of the NVR and have non POE or Wifi cameras connected over your Network side of the NVR as well. Only difference is that the cameras POE and your ones coming off the Network side of your NVR wouldn't be on the same IP addresses.

So your NVR is on 10.1.24.xx and your network is on 192.168.1.xx your POE cameras would be loaded into the NVR with 10.1.24.65, 10.1.24.66 and such where your Wifi or non POE cameras would be on your NVR over a 192.168.1.xx kind of setup..

Thank you for the welcome and the reply! I am now looking at that specific NVR and it says no built in wifi, so which models would I be wanting to look at if I wanted to be able to use wifi cams on the NVR.

No built in Wifi just means there is no Wifi Receiver built into the device. It can work from front and back Side. To be honest not many system are built for Wifi from a Security Stand point. There are to many issues that can happen to make things unhappy.. Also most companies don't offer a POE Wifi combo unit. I have one from 8 years ago that didn't work well and think they found from own learning to just leave Wifi to the normal Network an let them load in..

Remember it just said No Built in Wifi don't mean you can't use wifi cameras you just have to have them come from your netwrok router...

I'm so sorry if it seems like I'm repeating myself here, I just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly and don't end up buying the wrong device.

So basically the NVR has to be hooked up to an ethernet cord. Okay that is no issue for me. Basically the ones that are supporting wifi meaning they don't need to be wired to anything, just powered and a display. correct?

I have some knowledge with networking stuff so you just mean that each wifi camera will have its own IP address on my network. IE 192.168.X.X...192.168.X.Y....192.168.X.Z etc and if they are wired through POE they will have an IP address that is NAT'd through the NVR such as 172.10.X.Y 172.10.X.Z etc.

Yes, The Wifi cameras would get it's IP from your network or from a Static IP that you give it.. However just understand that the IP that it would be on has to be on the Network side of the NVR because between the NVR and Network it will have 2 different Ip Ranges...

One Range is from the POE ports, the second range would be from the Ethernet cable that is connected to it..
