One of the many reasons I like DVRs over NVRs.

One key advantage of DVRs over NVRs in certain applications is their ability to adjust the size of images sent via email notifications. DVR systems often allow users to configure image settings, enabling smaller, more manageable images to be sent when motion is detected or an alert is triggered. This flexibility can be beneficial for businesses or users who prefer faster email delivery or who need to conserve storage and bandwidth, especially when monitoring multiple cameras.

In contrast, many NVR systems typically send full-size images in email alerts by default. While this ensures maximum detail, it can lead to larger file sizes, which may slow down email transmission and consume more network bandwidth. Full-size images also occupy more storage space in email accounts or other archives, which can be problematic if notifications are frequent.

The ability to select smaller image sizes with DVRs makes them particularly advantageous for users who need to quickly review alerts on mobile devices or in environments where network constraints are a concern. This feature can enhance overall system efficiency and user experience without sacrificing essential security monitoring functionality.

I configured my NVR to display my 2MP TVI camera as an IP camera through the DVR. The first image is from the NVR, showing the camera's D1 format, similar to the sub-channel format typically used for IP cameras or NVRs. A second image is from a 4MP AI IP camera. This camera sends full-size images with a larger file size, and while I can adjust the image clarity, there's no option to change the actual image size—it remains at 4MP or whatever resolution the camera is set to, whether it's 2MP, 3MP, 4MP, 5MP, 6MP, 8MP, or even 12MP. In contrast, with a DVR, you can set cameras (from 2MP to 12MP) to send images in smaller formats like CIF, D1, or 960H, regardless of the camera's original megapixel resolution.

Now keep in mind that the DL file size is little smaller then the Email size not sure why. But it is. Also keep in mind that I did this test after the sun went down meaning that the image sizes are smaller at night time because the cameras saved images are smaller in file size at night. In the day time the DVR camera file size is about 27KB and the 4mp emailed image is 2mb depending on the time of day.
