Xfinity gateway and an IP Cam IP2M-841

Post by stikkman »

Having a heck of a time getting my IP2M-841 model Amcrest IP camera to connect to my dual band 5ghz/2.4ghz Xfinity X5 gateway. I was told the IP cam is not dual band but should connect to my gateway via the 2.4ghz speed (like other 2.4 devices on my network do) but it refuses. So my stop gap solution is to connect my IP cam to my Netgear EX3700 Wifi Extender which also allows both 5 and 2.4 ghz connections but for whatever reason my IP cam will connect. But the extender introduces another level of Wifi complexity as my EX3700 will often go offline timeout for reasons I'm unaware. Suggestions/Solutions - thx in advance!

Was hoping the IP Cam would just connect wirelessly to my Xfinity Xfi gateway like all my other wifi-enabled devices do regardless of speed and w/out the need for an extender. Even worse, for greater reliability I currently have the camera connected via an ethernet cable to my extender which limits where I can put it and makes the whole configuration one cludgey cable mess ;-( I've updated the firmware on both my IP cam and extender device but IP cam still fails to connect directly to my Xfinity Xfi gateway - HELP!

Finally! So I connected my IP cam to my Xfinity Xfi gateway via an ethernet connection, browsed to the camera interface by it's IP, updated the cam firmware and allowed it to reboot. Then, while still connected to my Xfinity gateway via ethernet, I updated the Wifi settings per the cam GUI. Was able to get it to connect to my primary 5ghz SSID and saw from the gateway side that it was still connected via ethernet at 2.4ghz speed. I then removed the ethernet cable from the back of my IP cam and it remained on my network - device list on my gateway showed my cam had since changed from an ethernet connection to 2.4ghz Wifi connection (yay!). I then unplugged the cam and plugged into an area on the other side of the house and it joined my primary SSID @ 2.4ghz speed automatically (yay again!) Hoping this behavior continues and seems to be the way to configure an IP cam w an Xfinity Xfi gateway modem. Victory! (let's hope?)
