Use of POE Switch

Post by SunniSteve »

For POE based security cameras, in order to reduce wiring work, I was thinking of placing a POE switch near the cameras and connecting the switch via wired network I already have. The NVR looks like it has POE plug for each camera so not sure if that'll work or not? The NVR will be in a separate room connected thru the wired network I have. Would that configuration work?

Hello SunniSteve ,

It should work that way. We also have POE NVR's that has a built in POE switch. So you can connect up to 8 cameras directly to the NVR. You can also go via any POE switch to the router for the cameras.

Re: Use of POE Switch

Thanks, Marvin. The reason I want to use a Poe switch is to minimize wiring in the attic. Not much crawl space. So, the switch will be in the garage where my cameras will be. The amcrest NVR will be in the living room connected thru a wired network which already exists. This wired network does not use a Poe line. Is that ok? I would assume so since the switch would be providing the power to the cameras. On the Amcrest NVR, there will be only one wired connection which will Is the net connection with the garage switch. Is that okay since the Amcrest NVR appears to have a port per camera? I would like to confirm this before purchasing it so any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi,

Its not necessary to have the cameras connected to the POE NVR. As long as they get power from POE swicth should be fine. The NVR should be connected to the router through the switch or directly and separate power is also required for NVR. The swicth that the cameras connect to also needs to be connected to the router. The NVR has multiple POE ports in case you want to use them for the cameras and thus avoid the need of another switch. So it should work the way you have mentioned.
