Motion Detection Unreliable

Post by ClarksonCote »

I have an IP2M-844E and it seems like the motion detection does not always work.

I have a region with sensitivity of 80 and a threshold of 8. This has detected my vehicle coming in and out of my driveway, and people walking outside my house, but not always.

For example, I walked out of my driveway this morning to pick up some trash cans, and the motion detection never worked. When I drove my car out of the garage, it also didn't work. The second case is most surprising, since people walking sometimes set it off and I don't understand how a car wouldn't be enough motion.

I can certainly duplicate the scenario and watch the detections to see if they get high enough.

What could be wrong here?

I have the same issue. My 60lb dog won't set off my outdoor cam motion detection, but if i wave my leg in front of the camera, it works fine. Messed with the sensitivity threshold from 0 through 100, and it doesn't make any difference

The only thing I've tried to do is increase the sensitivity a bunch and decrease the threshold. So in some regions I have the sensitivity set to 95 and the threshold set to 5. Still, there are times where it's just not detecting, though it seems less often.

I don't consider my camera to be a reliable security device - it's more of a toy. However I persevere with it and I'm currently experimenting with setting increasingly sensitive zones up to my house. I've now got 3 zones with the last set at 99 sensitivity and 3 threshold (am I right in thinking that 100 sensitivity and 1 threshold would be the most sensitive?)

You're correct that the most sensitive setting is a high sensitivity and a low threshold.

I'm frustrated because, on one hand, I need to set some areas with very high sensitivities and low thresholds to get any detections of people walking across the scene (30 feet away?), and even then some seem to get missed.

On the other hand, the camera video noise associated with infrared at night in the dark part of a scene can cause lots of false motion detections.

Between those two observations, it becomes very hard to set a threshold that will result in a high probability of detection and a low probability of false alarm. Instead, I get a low probability of detection, and a high false alarm, which is pretty useless.

Add to that, the fact that push notifications don't work for me (the camera itself seems to modify the settings every 10 minutes after I set them up, according to the camera's log), and email notifications don't either (my potential work around to the push notifications not working, despite the "Email Test" passing and motion detection enabled) and it all adds up to being awfully frustrating.

It really seems like Amcrest needs to add some logic in the motion detection algorithms to account for noise... So if some random cells in random places all "blip" and detect motions for one or two frames, that doesn't contribute as much to reaching the threshold compared with adjacent cells detecting motion across several frames.

I have the same issue. I replaced my Foscam cameras with these. The Foscams were far better at detecting motion IMO. I would have thought the Amcrest and Foscam cameras were technologically the same since they are basically the same company.
