Motion Detection Sensitivity/Threshold Algorithms

Post by EddieColeslawski »

Hello,

Trying to tweak motion detection on my IP8M-2493E camera to avoid false alarms caused by midday shadows of people walking by on the sidewalk being cast onto the porch that I am monitoring. My question is, what exactly do the numbers in Sensitivity and Threshold indicate? I have read that Sensitivity has to do with the rate of pixel change caused by motion, and that Threshold has to do with the size of the moving object (but saw a conflicting video saying that Threshold is a limit on motion tied to the the Sensitivity setting - the higher the Sensitivity, the more quickly Threshold is reached). It would be nice to know exactly what those numbers indicate - like if I set Sensitivity and/or Threshold to 50, I am setting them to 50 of what?

Thanks for the help.

have you read these articles?

https://support.amcrest.com/hc/en-us/ar ... -Threshold

https://support.amcrest.com/hc/en-us/ar ... Detection-

the trick to this is to find a sweet spot between sensitivity and threshold. to avoid false alarms, you can either lower sensitivity or increase the threshold, or both. be sure to document your settings with your tests until you find a sweet spot where false alarms are kept to a minimum or eliminated.

Thanks for the reply - I have reviewed both materials and they certainly provide some guidance, but what I am hoping to understand is what the numbers themselves actually mean, as that will allow me to be more deliberate with my adjustments.

To use the example of a car, if someone were to tell me that I could reach my destination faster if I used the gas peddle to increase the number on the dashboard gauge, that would be helpful. But, it would be even more helpful if they told me that the number indicates miles per hour.

Thanks again,
EC

I don't think you'll get a definitive answer :) .

Personally I tend to go for high sensitivity and relatively low threshold so as not to miss anything, something like 90 sensitivity and 10 threshold.

If you look at the matrix that defines the parts of the image being monitored, then in real time they flash as each square is triggered.
