IP8M-2496E shorted out during storm

Post by smokeybandit »

I had not one but TWO IP8M-2496E short out during a freak September snow storm. I can see the soot in the connector and even after cleaning it out and trying a new patch cable on the other end, no dice.

Any recommendations on if there might be any damage to the camera beyond the jack and tips for replacing the jack?

Update: I was able to clean the jack a bit more for one of the cameras and it's working again. Hopefully the same will be true for the other

Just to be clear, I assume you are talking about the Ethernet (RJ-45) connector on the cable a few inches from the camera. Was the weatherproof shield provided with the camera installed on that connector? I have 5 of these cameras and haven't had any problems. In one case, I was tempted to not install the shield because I had to cut the plug off the cable, install the shield, and then crimp on a new plug.

Yes, talking about the RJ45 connector. Through my own stupidity I did not have the water shield on for that same reason, it wouldn't easily fit (I have it on other cameras where I used a flat patch cable instead of a round one).

Camera #2 I have not been able to get to work just by cleaning the leads. If it's as simple as cutting it off and putting on a new plug, I'll try that.

Sadly it isn't that simple you will need to PIN it out on a Cat Wire there are 8 wires sadly most cameras only use 4 or 6 of them depending on POE and other options... Best to remove end with enough wire that you can Tone out the connector and make same.. Other option isn't as easy and can damage things.. Sadly I talk from Experience there lol.. Out of the 20 or so repairs I have made on IP cameras only 1 that wasn't even a Repair did I blow up the camera lol

In lieu of the protector (that requires an excessively large hole be drilled sometimes) you might seal the Ethernet connection with a big gob of silicone rubber. Cover the connection itself with electrical tape first and then make sure the silicone covers all the tape and a couple inches beyond so you dont have capillary ingress of water.

Strange enough, after leaving it for dead yesterday, I forgot I left it plugged in over night. Today I noticed a green light coming from inside the half disassembled camera. The thing works again.

Actually it worked on and off. I finally gave in and replaced the jack and it's working again.

Now the fun part on how to weather seal it to put back outside.

While I have not bought from this person.. Here is the type of boxes I use for weather proofing.. This is type there are many different sizes I didn't look at size just type to give you an idea.. While some elect to just hide mount the camera so another option would be a Junction box that your camera can mount too.. I Prefer this type...

ABS Plastic Dustproof Waterproof IP55 Junction Box Universal Electrical 3.4"X3.4

Also have a couple that only had holes on one side no seal so I mounted to have holes down and added 2 rubber plugs to fill the holes..
