how to setup Amcrest View app for remote viewing of ProHD

Post by jalperin »

I have the ProHD camera properly set up so that I can view it from a browser on my PC or from the Amcrest View Lite app – but only so long as the iOS app is connected to the home network (via wifi, of course). I set up port forwarding on my router, along with ddns, and if I turn wifi off on the iPhone, and type the ddns address into the mobile Safari app, I get to the login page for the camera, so I know that I’ve got port forwarding working and also ddns working. But how do I set up the Amcrest View app so that I can use it to view and control the camera?

Are you asking about how to set up AmcrestView on your phone or AmcrestView via a PC browser?

I'd like to use the Amcrest iOS app to view and control the camera when I'm away from home. The app works well when I'm home and connected to the camera via the local wifi, but doesn't work if I'm away.

Hello jalperin,
Port forwarding should be set up for the TCP port of the camera as well. When you add the device on your phone , make sure you are adding the TCP port of the camera on the app. You can also add the camera with P2p set up by scanning the Qr code which is the easiest method in which case you do not need to set up port forwarding.

Here's what I'm doing:
1) Camera is set up and working and connected to local wifi. It is visible from a desktop connected to the local network.
2) Add camera to the iOS app using P2p and scanning the Qr code. Now the camera can also be controlled from the app, but only while connected via wifi to the local network. It does NOT work if I turn the wifi and use LTE or if I use the phone at a remote location.

What am I missing?

Hello,
If the app is set up via the P2p method, it should actually work from anywhere, including other wifi and 3g/4g network. If you cannot connect to the camera from a specific wifi outside, such as from the office wifi, it might be because they have restrictions on certain port etc. If the 3g/4g signals are weak, it can cause this issue too. Please try the port forwarding method to see if it makes any difference in your case.

I know from experience that Melvin's answers are to simplistic. To use P2P on app, away from camera LAN, you had also better have the ddns parameters set up in the camera and P2P enabled in the camera, as well as port forwarding in the router. Here are some issues that prevent port forwarding:

a. Make sure camera HTTP, TCP, and UDP ports are open in the router. Test using www.canyouseeme.org
b. If your router is seperate from your modem, make sure the modem is in PASS-THRU mode.
c. Warning - some modems have a hidden virtual internal router which will block ports. Setting these modems to PASS-THRU mode will eliminate this problem and allow the modem to PASS_THRU to your router without blocking the ports. This virtual hidden router is not configurable and therefore causes stealth port blocking. If your modem has no obvious router configurations, then you may want to drill down the modem WAN tab to see if you can enable PASS-THRU mode. If you can, then there is a virtual router involved.
d. If all the above fails, then you will need to call your ISP (internet service provider) because some ISPs also block ports.

Hope this helps, Jalperin.
