Ethernet cable “speed”

Post by garypsu67 »

I have 3 Amcrest cameras. One is an 8mp POE with 25’ of cable to a switch connected to a router. One is a 2mp wired to a router with 25’ of cable. The third one is 4mp wired to a router with 6’ of cable. I have 100 mbps service. I am using Cat 5e cable. My question is would there be any benefit to rewire with Cat 7 cable? The cable is inexpensive and It would be easy to do.

I don’t believe so. The bandwidth requirements of the cameras are pretty low from a networking perspective.

Thanks for the replies. One more question. Aren’t these cameras using bandwidth at all times? If not, how would the 5 second pre record setting under storage, record control work?

Good question. I always assumed they had some limited flash storage onboard to maintain a constant buffer. That would allow them to pull from the buffer when motion is detected to go “back in time”.
