Do I need two chime kits for two doorbell cams?

Post by bphillips »

I'm building a new house and installing two Amcrest doorbell cams, one for the front door and one for the back door. I'm using a dual chime doorbell that has three connections, front, rear, and transformer. I'll hook the doorbells up respective to their location with the rear doorbell on the rear terminal and the front doorbell on the front terminal. If I do this, will I need to install two chime kits?

Hello and Welcome to the forum

It is said that both chime kits would need to be used.. I have done testing and I have even used 2 chime kits in different ways using 2 cameras however that was because I used 1 supply for 2 doorbell cameras one as a standalone connection and one with a chime.. IN this case I used one at the Power supply and one on the indoor chime pins for the second camera there was nothing out of sorts and things worked well even with both of the cameras in IR night mode.. I would personally use a 16vac 42 to 50va transformer however my 16.5vac 30va transformer works just fine for both cameras with IR on. Only thing is pressing the doorbell button 1 right after the other on a 30va with IR on there was not enough power for a second push within a few seconds after relay click..

So then I did the same test using my Altronix 16vac 50va transformer and had 5 presses on the stand alone and 3 on the one with the chime but that is because I had the doorbell setup for 10 seconds if I setup for 7 I can get 4 on the one with the chime and 5 on the standalone and this is with both doorbells connected to the same transformer and using them one right after another mainly testing for Transformer Recovery and camera performance..

However for a normal use home without loads of traffic in both places the 30va will power them just fine I would personally maybe not use a tone that requires more then 5 seconds and if both are going to be connected to INdoor ringer with loads of traffic I would go with a 16vac 60va to make sure there is enough power for recovery
Be Safe.
