2x Amcrest AD100 on 1x Transformer

Post by huntdeezy »

New to the Amcrest family. Been trying to do alot of reading but haven't seen many posts regarding two cameras on one transformer. My original doorbell install was 2 basic doorbells, digital chime (required diode), 16V-15VA transformer. I would like to install 2 AD110's and a digital or mechanical chime. Any recommendations as to a transformer size or is this even possible?

A few things I have noted:

-16V-30VA transformer recommended for a single AD110 install.

-24V transformer will kill chime kit for working on 16V.

-Recommended to install chime kit even though no chime used (several posts have mentioned killing transformer)

Any recommendations?

I do have room in my gang box to install two transformers if needed, but was unsure how this would affect install of a chime as far as wiring etc.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum...

So I have setup and I have worked 2 cameras on 1 Transformer without an issue.. However there are a few things to note.. While I have only setup 1 with Chime and one without on the same Transformer I am not sure yet about doing a F T and B setup with 2 chime boxes (is needed) and 2 cameras to one Chime again I am going to guess that Digital would be best. However keep in mind that you will need a few things if these is setup where they are close together or someone can make it to the other doorbell camera in a short time.. That is The amount of time it takes for a Doorbell to go offline after Multi Button Presses...

16.5vac 40va (2.4amps) and the cameras both working in IR pressing 1 4 times with 10 sec Digital time play will make that camera go offline and other one will have no issue.. However I will need to setup a test to check on a Dual Chime setup.. I am going to guess that it would be little different because if it was say front then back then front the first one will have some charging time between button pressing.. When the Button is Pressed there is a Relay in the Doorbell that can even be heard clicking this Relay Shunts the doorbells 2 pegs to make it a Switch for on in the time that the Relay is active the doorbell is living off 2 Med sized Super Caps.. Once that Relay releases the inside doorbell no longer rings and power is starting to charge the Super caps again...

Thanks for the follow up.

I was struggling to find any 16V class 2 transformers at or above 40VA. I can find plug-in transformers in the 40VA range but given that I just have Romex coming into the back of a 3 gang box, this seemed a bit more feasible. My digital doorbell merely just mounts over the gang box, transformer sat inside gang box. Anyone have any thoughts on the configuration I drew up in the link below?

Sadly I am not sure that is a good idea having 2 transformers on the 1 doorbell. I personally have not tried it myself but knowing a little about what is going on with the doorbell while trying to power just 1 doorbell camera seems like something bad would happen with 2 trying to power 1 for F and the other for B to be honest the T would be seeing a 32v That is only part of the issue then there is phases and even buying 2 transformers from same company it would be very hard for them to be 100% the same on the Low voltage output side do to the simplistic yet complex building of a Transformer...

I would rather buy a Plug in Transformer then play with Puff crackle who knows...
Here is the one that is at my cabin it isn't a Plug in it is wire in and worth every penny

Excellent. I've ordered that transformer you recommended and will post follow up results.

For scientific purposes, I did a little more research on the two transformer setup that I posted above. I actually came across a Ring Pro wiring diagram that is a similar setup. I may try to benchtop test this configuration with my AD110s and see what results are compared to the single 40VA transformer.

Awesome.. Well I guess it wouldn't matter then.. I personally not sure as I said.. Interesting they are powering 2 Ring Doorbell cameras on a 30va and not smaller if they are on their own Trans... However wondering if that is a Digital Doorbell that they want that connected to and then I could understand more with that type of setup however on a Mech doorbell that could pose a different issue.. Also I don't know what type of Chime Box they are using and might be different from the ones used by Amcrest and to be honest as long as the Doorbell can reject any transient effect from one press or both pressing the doorbell buttons at the same time I still personally wouldn't connect my camera up this way..
