Search won't play back

Just got a new NVR (UHD) to replace my HD model. The software that came with it is very problematic compared to the previous version. Main problem is this: occasionally search will play back but most often, when I go to Search, it won't play (after I have selected the cameras), the camera windows are blank, and a small red icon that looks like a suitcase with a hole in it (a camera? a lock?) in the lower left corner of each camera window. I can't find any reference to this icon in the manual.

What is it? How do I get rid of it? and how do I get the video to play back? Also, while the instructions show the Search window with a timeline for each camera (as did the old software) now I get only one timeline, no matter how many cameras are selected.
