External lighting for camera inside window.

Post by longedge »

Lighting for cameras 'looking' through windows can be a bit of a problem. I thought I'd share this video of a visitor last night in which there are 8 different light sources.

Toward the end the one Raccoon was getting ready to Strap lol... 10 years ago I had one bigger then that jump on my Dog that was trying to get 6 of them off the porch and out of his food. Took a Bat to him missing my dog mind you... The Thing rolls over a few times Jumps back to his Feet and looked at me like Come on Sucker I will take you on too.... After that no more food was left out. My boy ate in the house....

Yeah, and if you've got one of those doggie door things, those coons will come inside for the dog food.

Get the Dog door with FRID It will only open when your dog is at the door with his Tag on... When he isn't there the Door is locked and don't know how may Coons are going to go around looking for RFID tags lol I don't know maybe there are some out there with Code readers that will Steal the Code and make their own lol... Or maybe you don't get along with your Neighbor so he steals the code and puts them on all the ones in the neighborhood lol You come home from work, Pups out side like They ran me out of the house and 5 or 6 in there chilling like they own the place lol...

@jack7 That's excellent quality video, shows the shortcomings of looking through glass as mine do. Is it with additional IR lighting, apart from the camera ?

Just seeing a single fox is unusual for me you've got a whole menagerie there :)

@longedge
I do have external IR illumination but it's really pointed elsewhere. That spot does get some of the external IR but I turned on the camera IR also for that motion detect video. That's why the subjects have white eyes. :)
I leave the camera IR off most of the time, primarily because of bugs(not a problem right now). There is no white light anywhere normally except the moon.

Getting outside lighting right is, I think, one of the most important factors in home security. There isn't anywhere on my property where you can make a move in the dark without lights coming on. The main lights do interfere with my cameras at times, causing them to switch to day mode, but I have seen evidence in the past that they also deter criminals.

Even during the day, natural lighting is the most critical part of getting good video. Now if they ever invent a sun and cloud remote control, I'll get one :D
