i have the video standard set to ntsc and the screen is still black. no video.

What device and you happen to have a Picture?
Can you arp -a and get an IP address that you can log into and access the device? maybe the Setting for the Monitor was over set. So logging into the WebUI, and then setup, then display and change to 1024x768 is a good starting point.
