ASH42: How to get continuous recording to NAS AND motion video clips shorter than 5 minutes

Post by uh2 »

I have 2 ASH42's, and I can't seem to get continuous recording to a QNAP NAS via QVR PRO AND get alerted to motion events via the Smart Home app WITH video that represents the time before and just after the motion event. I'm not using the Smart Home Cloud. All my video is stored locally on a NAS and on SD cards in the camera.

THIS DID WORK....until I started to continuously record (24/7) with QVR PRO. I also added SD cards to both cameras. QVR PRO is configured to let the camera detect motion. Before QVR PRO was in the picture, I would get an alert from the app, and it would send me right to the video clip of the motion event after a few seconds. Now, I still get an alert, but I get sent to a video clip that is 5 minutes long. This is a problem because it takes a long time before I can even view the file, and it seems to depend on time and where the camera is in its 5 minute video file cycle (it appears that the camera is saving video in 5 minute "chunks" when recording).

I've used SmartPSS, The Amcrest Smart Home app and QVR PRO to check every single setting and I can't find anything that can tell the camera to not do this.

I've removed QVR PRO from recording on one of the cameras while I was typing this post to detail my troubleshooting steps. During the course of changing and reverting settings, all of a sudden the camera now refuses to save motion events to the SD card. I get notified...I even get a snapshot via email, but I can't view any locally stored footage.

These cameras have been the absolute worst with consistency in any device I've purchased/configured in my decades of experience. If I have to grab a ladder and factory reset them, I'll just take them down and donate them to someone I don't like. I bought these to utilize my NAS and replace Blink cameras which were a temporary measure because we were renting and planning on moving soon. I regret even trying to replace the Blink cameras...which I never thought I would say.

Sorry, I'm venting at this point. I've been dealing with this for weeks now just trying to replicate Blink's simple function of alerting you to motion via the app and giving you a video clip showing the event....while adding the ability to record 24/7.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Sadly the device your working with is a Smart Home Product and was designed to work with Smart Home app. When you start connecting like you told someone else to use SmartPSS and try connecting things to more then 1 or 2 platforms sadly these devices get confused and a word of Caution I would not make any changes to the cameras outside of the Smart Home app because doing so can Damage the camera beyond repair.. I am not only talking about non Amcrest Software there has been talk about others that have Bricked their Smart Home device just using Ip Config tool..

SO with the issues in this post I am going to give the best offer of advice I can right up front.. Remove the devices from QNAP and SmartPSS and do a Full Camera Reset by the Reset button on the camera. Set the Camera back up to the Smart home app just as you did when you first set the camera up and as long as you keep it to the app it should send you notices and get the event info your looking for..

Now for what you didn't know. When you connected it to SmartPSS the 2 items talk and at times make adjustment to devices that is hard coded into the camera programming when the device is setup for these changes sadly the Smart Home Products need to stay with Smart HOME APP... Anything out side of that will and can damage the camera.. If once the camera is setup again to when it works for your liking I would then and only then connect it to your Qnap as the 2 while might talk the Qnap has no Auth to tell the camera to do anything it is just a view and record platform however the SmartPSS is like a MASTER and the Smart Home Camera is it's slave and because of the coding the Master over rides the Slave and makes changes you don't even know is being made then things no longer work as expected...
Be Safe.

The QNAP QVR Pro online manual shows many possible camera settings that could be changed. Changes could probably be made if ONVIF works for camera or if camera API is used. QNAP even lists the Smart Home ASH42 as a compatible device.

"...SmartPSS is like a MASTER and the Smart Home Camera is it's slave and because of the coding the Master over rides the Slave and makes changes you don't even know is being made then things no longer work as expected."
I've never seen Amcrest Surveillance Pro(ASP) change any camera settings unless it was initiated by the user. And that includes the camera time of day.

@uh2
Just a sidenote since it's not for QNAP:
I have used ASP PC-NVR with the Smart Home ASH21 to record 24/7 and motion event video on a PC disk. ASH42 would likely work too. Snapshot below shows the ASP Replay screen. Amcrest View Pro can also replay the PC-NVR recordings by adding the PC-NVR IP address to View Pro. The current ASP is available at https://support.amcrest.com/hc/en-us/ar ... llance-Pro
That ASP, dated 2020-11-30, is about the same as SmartPSS, except ASP supports Amcrest P2P devices.
