Nvr topology for 32 cameras

Post by Mrbadss »

First time/ long time.

I’m considering a amcrest 5232 to replace my very old ware system I’ve had for 15 years now. Used daily btw.

I have rg6/bnc to each location but am going to pull that wire and replace with ethernet- cat 5e to each camera location home run.

My question is how to wire this topology wise. I’m wiring it all to a central location/ rack room.

I’m considering the nvr qversion with a 16 port Poe switch and then will get a second 18 (16 Poe plus uplink ports) port Poe switch for the cameras above 16- the nvr supports 32. Question is, do I plug the Poe switch into one of the camera ports on the back and cascade the switch or does the second Poe switch (and thus camera 16-32) go on the regular network.

I’m trying to isolate (without vlans) the cameras to their “own network” with separate switches and the nvr only connects to the lan. I guess you could say the nvr connects to 192.168.1.x and the cameras are all on their own switches (the internal one and the second cascaded switch) with 10.1.1.x ips.

In that case am I better off getting a 48 port Poe switch? But then the nvr doesn’t have a lan side and a camera side port to physically separate the cameras from the lan.

Part of why I’m doing this is to centralize with a backup so if the power goes down I have the right stuff on a backup to keep recording.

The topology is not very clear to me.

Any help?

Thanks,

Hello welcome to the forum.

Have the 5232E-16P older format NVR, normally 16port ip POE will be on its own switch, however the NVR does offer a Bridge mode option. Then you would use all your local lan ip for all ip cameras. So best to use a second router or a Vlan if you want to keep you ip cameras off your normal network. Setup the NVR normal ethernet port on a split vlan with access to your main network with internet access and that way you have access and remote p2p access while away from your location. If your looking to use Ai cameras you may want to look into 4232E-16P Ei
Cost less then my first gen 4216E-Ai nvr. Now there might be 5232 that is Ai not sure buy Walmart has one listed as such for over 800usd. I don't know the Ei 4232 or a newer 5232E-16P as I said mine is first Gen.

Thanks. Trying to avoid a vlan. Can the cascaded (second) switch plug into the switch in the back (a camera port) and use the same separate ip range (like its own private network)?

Thanks,

So I will not be able to test this out until the next time I go to one of my other locations where I have another switchs. Because of where my 5232E-16P is located at the moment and no access to a open port switch. I would need to test this out. Keep in mind that I have an older 5232E-16P and from what I have seen from listings else where the new version isn't the same as mine. So if it happens to work for mine it might not work for the new one I can't say.. However keep in mind that the limit would be 16ch and if you were looking to load 32ch then you might want to get the 16ch 16P version. Remember the shared Ethernet port is where the last 16ch are loaded from.
Be Safe.

Thanks man.

So you’re saying regardless of cascading switches only 16 channels can be on that subnet. And anything above 16 will need to be on the lan side? If that’s true it may defeat what I am trying to do.

Thanks
