I am trying to set up my 4108-HS NVR with an Asus router (RT-AC68U) acting as an OpenVPN server.
I asked Amcrest tech support for guidance and they stated that their NVR won’t work with a VPN. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I don’t trust P2P security and would rather use some sort of VPN.
I’m trying to use the Merlin firmware OpenVPN in server mode and iphone running OpenVPN client app for remote access. From what I can tell I have to run a DDNS service (No-IP) also for remote access, in combination with forwarding ports from the NVR via the router.
I’m not that paranoid about big brother watching my internet habits, so I’m trying to do this without paying for a public VPN server. All I want to do is to tighten security on my home system.

Hello and welcome to the Forum
Sadly if you called Amcrest Support and they say it won't work then why would you keep trying to Re-Invent the wheel.
Not worried about Big Brother yet your worried about P2P... Why is it that people are so worried over something that is not NEW... I know you see VPN and Thank Virtual Private Network and think the word in that makes you feel secure is Private I am going to guess... There are options to make things work outside the LAN.. Opening and forwarding Ports are not as smart as people think..
Love P2P maybe look up what P2P is and might get a better understanding.. I can tell you that P2P makes all the guess work disappear in matter of seconds...
Real fast and dirty what the P2P will do... Camera (Still needing a Password to work) Punches a hole in your network and goes out to a P2P server that is rolling around the world in many places. This Server then passes it a Line for it to make home... THe server then listens for Pings from around the world and if these pings are heard the server then hands off the Camera to your Device that is trying to make connection. Then at this time and only at this time do you have to put in a Password this is just like making a connection at home. Then if the password is right your working on your camera like your at your own Lan... There is no special Ports to open or trick your Firewall to leave out and exposed for some hacker to try and DOS attack your open port... The server never sees your password it is only tasked with your SN info and listens for pings to you wanting a Open Connection to your camera...
How easy is it to use P2P... Turn it on in your camera if you have it off. Setup your App or ASP to use P2P for your connection to your Camera. Then anywhere you go bring up app click on camera and your there it is really fast... No need to have a No Ip company remembering what your current IP address is from your ISP, no need to Forward any port outside of your network, no need to worry about trying to build a VPN and Tunnel system when your P2P already will do all the hard work for you without you having to do anything more then turn it on, setup to use P2P...
You know all them companies out there that don't really have options for Networking on the Camera Apps... Yet you can access the Camera from outside of the house while away. It isn't anything other then P2P setup by design.. Fast and fluid. Makes people feel like they have something special when really it is just P2P in the background..

This might help explain a few things including DDNS with OpenVPN.bradetter wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2020 10:38 am I am trying to set up my 4108-HS NVR with an Asus router (RT-AC68U) acting as an OpenVPN server.

Your OpenVPN proposed configuration should work fine. I have done it before. I don't know why support told you it would not work. You don't need to forward any ports since your mobile device will be able to access any local device, including the NVR.
Re: NVR 4108-HS VPN
The above written configurations worked for me. Port forwarding wasn't required.

@bradetter If your really concern about your p2p connection with your openvpn client then you contact with vpn provider support team. They have much technical information to resolve your issue. After that you still face same issue, then you go with another vpn like Express, PureVPN and Nord
