Saving recordings through FTP

Post by keypony »

I have an IP2M-841 cam and motion detect is set to 15 second recording.
When I select local SD as storage, it records 15 seconds. But selecting FTP, it only saves 3 seconds of video to server.
Is there a setting that I am missing?

You don't say whether you are saving to an FTP server on your local network or to a remote one, that might be relevant.

I only save snaphots from my IP2M-841 to my NAS ftp server which is on my LAN. Whether you choose SD card or FTP for your storage location should have no effect on the length of the recordings as far as I know.

When I experimented with saving video to my NAS using ftp, I found that I often lost the first few seconds. I think that might have been down to network congestion because the sensitivity level that I set for my camera means that I get almost constant activations at night. How many recordings are being 'triggered' by your camera?

p.s. - I should add that until I updated the camera firmware, I was ablt to record video to my NAS using NFS without any loss at all. FTP implementation has been less than perfect for one reason or another since I bought my first IP2M-841

Thanks for the reply.
I save remotely but like you said it should not effect the record size.
This is my 2nd IP2M-841 in few years. I remember using old cam to save recordings with no problems except that over triggering was filling server space (why I stopped saving recordings).
Checking the recordings, looks like 1.5 meg of 12 meg is recorded and the rest of frames are dropped. Not much for video. I tried saving snapshot instead of video and no matter what the motion detect setting is (1-3-5), it saves only one snapshot.
Firmware updates have broken this good camera.

OK, the fact that it's a remote server makes me wonder about bandwidth then. Each activation first needs a login (is this over secure FTP - latest version of TLS has been a problem for me lately) and then of course your upstream bandwidth has got to be reliable and sufficient.

I'd be more inclined to say that firmware updates have not yet resolved issues that go back a long way with FTP.

The latest update certainly broke the NAS storage option.

I agree that the IP2M-841 is a good camera and in many ways I find it better than my IP3M-941's.

p.s. - I should have added " I think " when I said that each activation requires a log-in :)

Another thing I have noticed now that FTP activated for snapshot only, the email option of snapshots is intermittent or motion is completely missed.
May be resources not available for detecting motion when cam is processing last motion?
For now it seems like FTP is not worth using and glad I got your feedback on NAS. Hated to setup a NAS system and find out it was broken too.
Thanks for the info.

I've got no idea whether this is relevant at all but on my system (Windows 10 Build 1909) Windows Firewall (Private Network setting) has at times prevented access to my IP2M-841B. Oddly after I switched the firewall off and accessed the camera a few times and then re-enabled it, it worked normally again.

I think that quite a few problems that we attribute to our cameras are in fact caused by something other than the camera itself :) .

I agree. Too many pieces complicating our systems.
Never know if cam not accessing the network or phone taking up all bandwidth uploading photos to google.
I try not to dig too long or too hard anymore. Not much hair left to pull out.
