Lightning/surge protection

Post by Sabot »

I lost 3 cameras due to what it looks like to lightning. Is there solutions to prevent the damage to this. My system is on a surge protector. Thanks

Hello and Welcome to the forum

Type of cameras? Type of install? not sure what type of Surge Protector your using but from what it sounds like it didn't work. Might want to look into a different brand and or if it is backed by insurance I would have them back up and replace the cameras.. I know the ones I bought said there was Item replacement if they fail not sure all offer that and I have little faith that I would be able to get a Cent if anything happen but something to look into if there was a statement of protection

Thanks for your reply. Amcrest IP8M-2496EB,residential. Sorry I meant I have the system on a outlet surge protector but I'm asking for an ethernet cable surge protector. Looking for options since it looks like I have to put one on each end of the ethernet cable to protect the switch and the camera.

To be honest I only have them at 1 end of of the system and you want them as close to your recorder as you can.. The ones I bought were 100 each and that was before they came out with some cheap ones that are out there today.. I have seen them for as little as 15 each and I am not sure how safe they would be. I know the ones I own I can not find them and when I do I try and buy them because I have found at 1 time where it worked and since I have been sold on them..

However I have been toying with the idea of buying one I seen on Amazon that comes with a box and is Free form setup meaning the box is there and a Circuit board inside that has the PCB exposed and 2 jacks for your in form your NVR and camera plus shows the chokes so if it was damaged you don't have to wonder if that is what failed or did the camera fail.. After removing the one that died of mine and installing a Small pass though switch (that is a switch that will allow POE to pass though it) and the camera came to life I knew the damge was taken by the protector... Anyway this one I am talking about that I have been looking at is only around 35 each and if it works that will be the ones I will go with from now on. Seeing I can open box and see the choke and if burnt you know why camera not working.. Anyway they are from some one Called Tupavco They might be required to be at both ends I know the ones I bought were designed to be at 1 and said having them at both ends could cause damage in a event of strike however I have seen some that looks like them but just a cheaper version and was under 20 each not sure I put much weight in the effectiveness of the unit...

Also where I was calling chokes they are really GDT or Gas Discharge tubes in true terms

Oh Sorry I also thought I might want to complete the info as well.. Maybe the reason your setup didn't work if you have the type I have or the ones I am talking about is maybe because the cable your using isn't designed for the setup your trying to complete...
Meaning you need a Grounded shielded cable (STP) and your ends need to be with the metal outside ends that carry the ground from 1 end to the other and this is what might be lacking in your setup.. Also if you made the setup you might want to test that you have a good continuity between the 2 ends.. Remember the cable one needs to look for is true copper STP and not the general Real Copper UTP that you can use indoors and patch panels

Depending on length you might also look into a Fiber setup between buildings if you live in a High Lightning area...
