Delay in Live View

Post by David Bird »

I have an IP3m-943 mounted on a garage ceiling. The wireless router is about 35 ft away. Line of sight, the signal must pass through a brick wall and 2 Sheetrock walls. When I'm using Live View from my PC, there is a significant delay between an event occurring and the event appearing on the screen. Am I looking at a settings issue or a distance from the router problem?

How big of a delay? You shouldn't expect instantaneous response.

Not sure if you have done this yet or not, but i have the same issue with an IP2 ProHD wifi cam. One of the things you should do if you have not yet, is update the firmware to the latest one. It seems to help all my cams. I also had this issue with the POE cam's i installed in a bar. I have a 16 Cam POE system running there and it was having issues with delayed signals. I upgraded firmware on all those and also separated the network's to have the entire camera system on it's own router and network. This has sped up the refresh rates tremendously. I would start with a firmware update, then make sure that your signals are prime. If that's ok and you are still having issues after the firmware update, then i would say it's more than likely not a distance issue but more that it's a signal quality issue. YOu can still have a good signal but the quality of it might be really reduced going through the brick. A very easy thing to do is if you have an old linksys router sitting around, you could throw that in the garage ad configure that as just an WAP. simple and easy to do with these old routers. MUCH cheaper than buying an actual WAP and putting it in. I have used a crap-ton of linksys routers as WAP's and for less than $5 they work great to extend your network. I have also put in my garage for the same reason of signal quality, a linksys WRT54G WAP. Now my signal is extended down the end of my block. I have a old couple that lives down the street at the end of the block that still get's 4 bars from my signal. They didn't have any internet at their house so i told them they could connect to mine and use it. They are in heaven now and can skype with their grand kids all the time. Made me feel great helping out the old couple. They even kick me $15 a month for access. SO i just made the WAP their own network and hooked my cams to it. I get a batch of peanut butter cookies every week from the couple. They love it so much that they always ask me if i need anything discounted using their senior discounts. Made good friends and we shop all the time together now lol.

Thanks for your suggestions....I will be upgrading firmware first thing tomorrow. I'm not familiar with how to add a wap router to the mix. I do have an older 2g router that I'm not currently using....will probably have to do a little research on that. Thanks, again.

He meant put an access point in your garage. That would mean hardwiring from your router. Frankly, if you can do that, run a wire to your camera. Hopefully, the firmware will help. 35 ft and drywall is nothing. If you have an Android phone, you can download the app Wifi Analyzer and check out the signal and any potential interference.
